Krakow, Poland Holidays & Hotels

Hotels in Krakow

If your perfect city break involves culture, architecture and beautiful food and drink, then you just have to visit Krakow. Poland’s former Capital City amazes visitors with its attractive streets and historical monuments. Each neighbourhood has its own unique atmosphere; from the culturally generous Old Town, to the vibrant Jewish quarter of Kazimierz. A holiday is never long enough, with so much to explore and enjoy.

Krakow offers a memorable stay to suit all budgets and tastes. Most tourist accommodation is based in the heart of the Old Town or in the City Centre, with all the excitement just a stone’s throw away. For those seeking a luxurious holiday, there is an abundance of 4-star boutiques and hotels. These sophisticated abodes are prominent around the city and are a favourite amongst those who prefer a more stylish retreat. If you are travelling on a budget, or passing through as part of a longer trip, there are many cheap options in this mesmerising city.

Where to stay

Stare Miasto (Old Town)

The infamous Old Town is the vibrant heart of Krakow’s historical culture. Recognised as one of Europe’s most beautiful locations and declared as a World Heritage Site, you will be lost for words at the unforgettable experience this town provides. Roaming the bustling streets, you can take in its charm as well as the delicious aromas of traditional Polish cooking. There are many sights to see, from the gothic bricked architecture of St Mary’s Basilica to the medieval Rynek Glowny, one of the largest market squares in Europe.

Kazimierz (Jewish Quarter)

Known as one of the coolest neighbourhoods in Krakow, this bohemian district is packed with rich history, quirky bars and hip boutiques. Home to one of the most significant Jewish communities, this colourful part of town boasts stunning architecture and an energetic nightlife. A food-lovers favourite, this district is brimming with high spirited cafe culture and stripped down eateries. Be sure to enjoy a beverage at Alchemia, an arty bar that mimics a traditional Polish living room, after a bountiful day of sightseeing and rambling along the Vistula.

Kleparz (Central Alternative)

If you are looking for somewhere close to all the major landmarks that is also set back from the buzz of the tourists, then Kleparz is the place for you. This small, mainly residential district offers a quiet alternative to the City Centre, directly above the lively area of the Old Town. This is the perfect holiday location to immerse yourself in authentic culture and the Polish way of life. Spending your days amongst the locals, you can relax and take in the town’s ambiance. Be sure to visit its market, Stary Keparz, to sample the regional fruits and cheeses and enjoy a beer in one of its many local pubs.

What to see

For the Culture Vultures, Krakow is bursting with opportunities to get your cultural fix on holiday. From the Jewish Culture Festival to the city’s annual Film Festival, the fun never ends. As Krakow was once Poland’s capital, there is an abundance of rich history to explore. Museums, tours and galleries provide ample opportunity to learn of its dark secrets and macabre happenings during World War II. Make sure to pay a visit to Oskar Schindler’s Factory, which exhibits the sombre chronicles of Krakow whilst under Nazi rule.

For the art lovers, pay a visit to the breath-taking Palace of Art, located in the Old Town. To check out emerging artists from the polish art scene, visit the Museum of Contemporary Art. Krakow’s magnificent monuments are dotted around the city, and can be enjoyed by foot. Be sure to see Wawel Cathedral, hosting 18 chapels with outstanding designs. Also, take a stroll down Kanonicza Street, one of Europe's most ancient and most beautiful streets. If you are taking a romantic break with a loved one, seek out the Lover’s Bridge and take part in the ritual of locking in your love for all to see.

Nightlife

Legend has it, that Krakow hosts the highest density of bars and pubs in the world. Wherever you can imagine a watering hole, there probably is one. From cellar pubs to themed bars, Krakow has it all.

For a night out on the Old Town, prepare to be wowed by the vast selection of stylized bars. For the ultimate olde-worlde experience which captures the vibe of Kazimierz, head down to Eszewerias. This bar is for those wanting to step out of the hustle and bustle into a hip hangout with the most romantic of restrooms! For something a bit more upbeat, check out the decedent Mercy Brown in all of its 1920’s glory. This speakeasy style cocktail bar shows off the city’s exclusive artists and artisan tipples. With no signage or obvious entrance, this atmospheric bar located above the Smakolyki restaurant provides a truly exciting experience - once you find it that is! Another one not to be missed is the Starry Port, the city’s only sailor bar. This rum filled, candle-lit nautical themed treat hosts high energy sing-alongs and pirate shenanigans until the early hours.

What to eat

At the heart of Krakow’s cuisine are lavish amounts of herbs and spices, game dishes and wild mushrooms. Make sure you sample some Pierogi, which are dumplings stuffed generously with sweet or savoury fillings. Krakow is also famous for its Zapiekanki which is a pizza-style baguette which definitely hits the spot!

Krakow has a large amount of eateries, offering something tasty for everyone. The local cuisine blends traditional flavours with European influences. For a true Polish holiday, visit the Black Duck and enjoy a Sour Rye Soup in a bowl made of bread or a hearty Bigos Stew. If the weather permits, take the opportunity to sit outside here, as the garden offers a lush green oasis in the summer months.

Shopping

You can find everything you need at Galeria Krakowska, the city’s largest shopping mall located in the Old Town. If you want to avoid the long queues and enjoy a more peaceful atmosphere, head over to Bonarka town centre for a lower key peruse around the shops. Up and down the vibrant streets in the charming district of the Old Town, you can find shops here, there and everywhere. Don’t forget the generous selection of souvenirs available to purchase at the historical landmarks, galleries and museums - these make great presents!

Lovely stay!

I stayed with my boyfriend at Angel House in September and it was really pleasant stay! Only 10 minutes to Main Square and Old Town. The helpful staff gave us a lot of information about Krakow. Rooms were very clean and cosy, you can make coffe/tea whenever you want. Despite late check-out we could leave our luggage. Free Internet access. Would stay here again.
