Amsterdam Holidays & Hotels

Hotels in Amsterdam

From 5* canalside hotels to quirky cheap hostels, you can find virtually every type of accommodation in Amsterdam’s variety of districts. And whether you want something in the middle of all the action, or would rather experience the quieter side of the Netherlands capital during your holiday, there’s the perfect neighbourhood waiting for you.

Cultural events, parties and a rich tapestry of history: there are endless reasons why people travel to Amsterdam. Couples, families and groups of friends are spoilt for things to do in this eclectic city all year round, making it the ideal destination for everything from a winter city break to a week-long holiday.

Where to stay

Jordaan

You’ll need your cameras at the ready for this picturesque area of Amsterdam, which is home to quaint bridges and all the artistic vibes. The Jordaan neighbourhood is to Amsterdam what Shoreditch is to London. It’s full of independent shops, quirky accommodation, and chic restaurants - plus it’s handily just a short walk away from all the city centre sights, including the Anne Frank House. Just as you’d expect in this neighbourhood, accommodation is varied and stylish, ranging from budget hostels to upmarket canalside lodging.

Dam

If you want to be in the middle of the city on your holiday, the Dam neighbourhood is where you’ll find the heart of all the action, from the after-dark entertainment of the Red Light District to the main shopping centre. Large hotel chains are dotted around the centre, giving you easy access to key sights including Madame Tussauds, the Amsterdam Dungeon and the National Monument.

Amsterdam Oud-Zuid

Set a short walk away from the city’s central canal network, the Oud-Zuid area showcases a quieter side to Amsterdam. Check into one of the chain hotels or independent accommodation options and you’ll be on the doorstep of some of the city’s most exciting museums, like Rijksmuseum and the contemporary art of Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. You’ll also be close to the 120-acre Vondelpark, perfect for daytime strolls, summer picnics and free open air concerts between May and September.

What to see

Whether you’re in Amsterdam for a weekend or longer holiday, you’ll be spoilt for things to do in this vibrant city. The first port-of-call for many is to track down the Instagrammable ‘I Amsterdam’ letters which move around the city every few months. Once you’ve taken all the photos to fill up your feed, learn more about the city by exploring it from a new perspective: by a boat tour, along its UNESCO protected canal belt. Tours take in the history of the city and provide the perfect views to take in the twinkling fairy lights over the charming bridges.

Culture vultures will love the range of museums available around the city. The Anne Frank House, based in the exact building where Anne and her family went into hiding during World War 2, is one of the most popular. However, there’s everything from Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art to the Museum of Bags and Purses and also Heineken Experience, catering for all tastes. And, of course, no holiday to Amsterdam is complete without visiting Bloemenmarkt. Found along the Singel canal, the world’s only floating flower market sells colourful plants and accessories to brighten up your home. Read more about the top cultural spots in our blog here.

Nightlife

From all-night raves to low-key bars, Amsterdam has it all for every type of holidaymaker. The city has a thriving nightlife scene, with clubs regularly hosting international DJs. Hen and stag parties are a regular sight around the city centre thanks to its influx of bars, pubs and coffee shops - there’s everything from old-school bars to lively clubs.

For quirky nightlife, head out of the main centre towards Amsterdam Oud-West. It’s got much more of an alternative scene, with speakeasys and jazz clubs sitting alongside world-famous clubs and various music venues.

What to eat

The Netherlands is famous for many tasty treats, including stroopwafels, pancakes, Dutch fries and raw herring. A short walk out from the Jordaan neighbourhood is Foodhallen, a site that features dozens of food stalls all under one roof. Pick up some Chinese cuisine, traditional Dutch snacks or some Mediterranean delicacies, and then huddle around the central seating area with your friends.

Shopping

Amsterdam is a shopper’s paradise, offering plenty of opportunities to pick up gifts for loved ones back home - as well as some treats for yourself. The city centre is home to a number of local and international chains where you can pick up clothes, Dutch delicacies, homeware and souvenirs. For something a little different, head to Albert Cuypmarkt in De Pijp. It’s open six days a week and is one of the most famous street markets in the city. You’ll find everything from food to bags, clothing and flowers.

13 December 2018

3 nights

Lovely room, very friendly staff, great location, only flaw was that the bar was a bit too quiet but that’s personal preference. Overall, would definitely go back.

The best thing about my stay was...

Nice place friendly staff

Lovely hotel room was small but nicely done and quite comfortable, hotel is in a nice quite location but about 20 minute walk to city centre each time. Did not like the fact we had to pay 150 Euro deposit on arrival without having been warned if you were on a tight budget that could ruin your holiday.

The best thing about my stay was...

Nice room nice quite location

Ideal location with very friendly & helpful staff

Excellent base from which to explore the city. Rijks Museum a short walk away as was the tram stop on the lines which run through the main shopping areas to the main station. The hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful on all aspects of the stay from check-in to check out. Some rooms seemed compact but the one we were allocated (307) was roomy although the window overlooked the glass sided lift so curtains remained closed throughout our stay. (This was not an issue as we tended to be out and about during daylight hours.) Shower room was modern but compact. The shower itself was excellent. We would happily stay there again If we return to Amsterdam.

The best thing about my stay was...

Location & friendliness of the staff

Weekend break

The hotel staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was far too small for two people sharing but fortunately we didn't spend too much time in it. Breakfast was good, didn't try dinner.

The best thing about my stay was...

Location to centre was good, everything was in walking distance

Hotel is fine, it's location is the best thing about if 5 minute walk from ledinsphien where you can get the tram into city centre, Rooms are small and they charge you a 60 euro deposit. Didn't try the food so can't comment on that, we rarely stayed in the hotel at all. So the hotel inst great or it isn't great either but suited our needs

Review of 'AMS MUSEUM'

The hotel is quiet yet very conveniently located only 100m from the Rijksmuseum and the canal tours. There are no facilities for tea or coffee making. The one downside is the lack of cheap eating places nearby. Continental breakfast is more than adequate.
If you don't like being amongst renovations ( no noise problem as the workers start late and finish early ) then give it a miss. But it is great value at this time.
The hotel is being renovated so the rooms are "new". The only problem is that the shower leaks a lot of water over the bathroom floor.
To get there catch tram 2 or 5 from Central Station and alight at the Rijksmuseum ( the tram staff are very obliging ).
We would stay there " next time ".

Review of 'AMS MUSEUM'

This hotel is in a good location, situated in the museum district of Amsterdam, very near to the Van Gogh and Rembrant museums. It is easily accessible by tram numbers 2 and 5. Our room was shabby but clean with comfortable beds. It was quite cramped, with one bed right on top of the bathroom door. The plumbing was inefficient, we had a blocked waste in our basin and sometimes the toilet did not flush. The hotel is being refurbished so I suppose the facilities will improve. The breakfast was fine with a choice of rolls, cheese, meat plus usual cereals etc. As a base for a cheap short break in Amsterdam this hotel is OK.

Clean friendly hotel a little basic perhaps but they are undergoing refurbishment. Would certainly recommend it to others.
