Bristol Holidays & Hotels

Hotels in Bristol

A rich maritime history, an electric arts scene and nightlife to rival the capital’s: Bristol is easily one of England’s most happening hotspots. Branches of the River Avon flow directly through the city, making the waterways one of the best ways to see the city in full flow. Bristol is easily accessible from many of England’s most popular cities, sitting under 2 hours from London by train.

Bristol has a multitude of accommodation options to suit everyone, whether you’re in town for a romantic weekend or for a getaway with the whole family. After a day of sightseeing, rest up in a cosy hotel room, a luxury apartment or a mid-budget chain hotel.

Where to stay

City Centre

If you’re short on time, there’s no better place to stay than in Bristol’s city centre. You’ll be close to all the action, including the main city sights, lively nightlife and shops. Immerse yourself in the maritime history with a stay around Harbourside - which is also one of the most convenient areas to stay in if you’re in town for an event at the O2 Academy or Bristol Hippodrome.

Bristol’s City Centre is brimming with accommodation choice. There are spacious apartments for those in need of space to spread out, while there are spa resorts and 4* contemporary hotels for guests looking to combine their stay with a shot of luxury. There are also a number of 3* chain hotels to hand which are perfect for those travelling for business or pleasure.

Clifton

While the area offers visitors a quieter place to stay than the city centre, it definitely doesn’t scrimp on character. An area of Bristol that’s less than 10 minutes from the city centre by car, Clifton is well known for its charming Georgian townhouses, quirky nightlife and historic sights. It’s also the best area to stay in if you’re attending the city’s famous International Balloon Fiesta, held every August.

Many of the big-name hotels are found close to the city’s centre, leaving Clifton to showcase a colourful mix of accommodation options. Expect to find a selection of mid-budget hotels located in traditional Georgian buildings, as well as large serviced apartments.

What to see

There’s plenty for the whole family to see and do in Bristol, starting with one of the city’s most famous sights: Brunel’s SS Great Britain. Now a museum, the boat was the longest passenger ship in the world from 1845 to 1854. Step on board for a glimpse of what sea travel was like back in the Victorian age. Another of Brunel’s most iconic sights in Bristol is the world-famous Clifton Suspension Bridge. Built in the early 19th century, the bridge offers spectacular views out across the picturesque Avon Gorge.

Just outside the city centre is Bristol Zoo Gardens which has a varied selection of animals, seasonal kids’ activities and unique experiences. Similarity, Bristol Aquarium’s underwater tunnels and collection of marine life is enough to keep all family members entertained for hours. We The Curious is another popular spot for a family outing: the science centre features a planetarium along with a number of fun interactive exhibits and experiments.

Bristol’s alternative scene isn’t hard to miss, with the city’s walls becoming a blank canvas for street artists. World-famous graffiti artist Bansky comes from Bristol, and today much of his original artwork can be seen across the city. Take a walking tour of the city’s best street art to make sure you catch it all. On warm summer evenings, the harbour area turns into a hive of activity, and is the best place to chill with friends and soak up the city vibes. Be sure to have your camera at the ready for Instagrammable colourful Georgian townhouses that overlook the harbour.

Nightlife

As a thriving student city, Bristol’s nightlife is lively and varied, with more affordable options thrown into the mix. The nightlife scene takes in nightclubs, casinos, karaoke bars, quirky speakeasies and pubs - not to mention chic cocktail bars and lounges. There’s also multiple live music venues which attract high-profile artists throughout the year. The majority of the city’s nightlife can be found in the city centre, with College Green and King Street providing a central strip for clubbers and bar-hoppers to congregate.

What to eat

A delicious mix of street food, gourmet restaurants and quaint cafes await visitors to Bristol. It’s also the destination that has the most Michelin stars in the UK outside of London, proving just how high-quality its food offerings are. Bristol is also a very vegan-friendly city, hosting multiple vegan restaurants, market stalls and cafes. No matter what type of food you enjoy, make sure you try some locally produced cider before you leave: there are several cider farms in the nearby vicinity, making the drink the city’s unofficial tipple.

Shopping

Fan of shopping? You’ll be in your element in Bristol. The city’s brims with places for locals and visitors to splash the cash, even having its own Shopping Quarter where hundreds of boutiques, high street stores and designer brands can be found in one place. In this area you’ll also find Cabot Circus, a new multi-storey shopping centre that’s home to over 120 shops and restaurants. For shopping with a twist, make sure to visit upmarket Clifton Village for its quirky gift shops and boutiques. But, for a shopping experience like no other, there’s no beating St Nicholas Market, held from 9:30am Monday to Saturday. Found inside the historic The Exchange building in Bristol’s Old City, this market is where you’ll find a varied selection of food stalls as well as local arts and crafts.
