Barbados Overview

Barbados is the easternmost island in the Caribbean and is the most British of the islands with its familiar liking for afternoon tea, cricket and dressing for dinner. The capital and commercial centre of the island is Bridgetown, steeped in rich history and culture. St Lawrence Gap is top of the class for nightlife with reggae bars, calypso clubs and some of the best restaurants in the Caribbean. Barbados is home to some of the best beaches in the world with over 70 miles of glorious white sand beaches and warm crystal waters, making it one of the favourite Caribbean islands.

Platinum beaches

Barbados is home to many beautiful beaches, with each beach bringing something unique to the island. Everyone has their favourite. One of the most popular beaches on the platinum coast is Mullins Bay, in St Peter. Here you can safely enjoy the waters or venture out on a jet-ski. Another strong contender for the best beach on the west coast is Payne’s Bay, where you can stroll, swim and snorkel. Last but not least is Bottom Bay, a picture perfect tropical beach lined with coconut palms, white sands and sapphire waters.

Live like a local

Barbadians love to dance. Most of the nightlife is located on the south coast with the island waking up as the sun goes down. There are dozens of restaurants and watering holes in each parish offering a range of dancing including calypso, reggae and pop. Cricket is the national sport of Barbados, you’ll find it played by amateurs on the beaches and world-class matches at the manicured grounds of Kensington Oval.  You can’t miss out on experiencing authentic Bajan cuisine, the national dish is flying fish with cou-cou. On a Friday night experience the fry in the quaint fishing village of Oistins and enjoy freshly caught fish cooked in front of you.

Hidden treasures

Beneath your feet explore one of the wonders of the island, Harrison’s Cave. Set in the heart of Barbados, the cave is full of spectacular formations of natural wonder. A holiday to Barbados wouldn’t be complete without a trip to a local rum distillery, the Mount Gay Rum Tour offers a complete history of the brand, a tour of the museum and free tasters for rum lovers. A popular site for water sport fanatics is Folkestone Marine Park, here divers can explore a sunken ship and follow an underwater trail around the reef.
