With magnificent golden sand beaches, a lively centre and plenty of kid-friendly attractions, Maspalomas is definitely a great choice for families looking to visit this island. With an incredible location for day trips across the Gran Canaria, Maspalomas is a great base for those looking to explore the Canary Islands. The gorgeous surrounds, easy-going atmosphere and relaxed vibe make this a firm favourite among island-goers.

As well as attracting families, Maspalomas also draws in a large gay community. With an incredible designated gay zone on Maspalomas beach and week-long Gay Pride festival every year, it’s definitely a welcoming place for all.

Where to Stay

Maspalomas Centre and Holiday World

If you’re looking to be in the heart of all the action during your holiday, there are a variety of apartments available to rent in the centre of Maspalomas. Whilst they can be considered smaller than other accommodations, you are within walking distance of both the Plaza and Holiday World, two of the most popular locations for bars, restaurants and attractions.

Playa de Maspalomas

With the beach right on your doorstep, a Playa de Maspalomas resort is the ideal location for families looking to take advantage of the gorgeous golden sands and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Reservera Natural Dunas (The Maspalomas Sand Dunes)

Although you can’t physically stay in the sand dunes, there are plenty of hotels and resorts located within walking distance to both the National Park and the nearby Maspalomas Golf. If you’re looking to stay in one of the most breath-taking areas of the resort, this could be it.

What to see

One of the busiest attractions in the area is Payla de Maspalomas, a stunning golden sand beach just minutes away from some of the most popular island hotels. Once you’ve found the perfect spot, it’s easy to spend the whole day enjoying the year-round sun and gorgeous Atlantic Ocean views. For the adrenaline junkies, there are plenty of watersports and schools located along the beach, most of which run all year round.

Another incredible and must-see attraction in Maspalomas is the sand dunes - a nature reserve with over 400 hectares of soft sand peaks. This amazing area certainly provides you with plenty to see and do on your holiday, especially as you can spend hours walking the sand dunes alone. As well as the incredible views surrounding the dunes, you can enjoy the gorgeous golden sands. Declared a National Park In 1994, these dunes certainly cannot be missed.

For those that are visiting the Sahara-like dunes but don’t fancy the long and difficult walk, you can always opt to explore them by camel safari. These daily trips are extremely popular with tourists and will give you the opportunity to have the perfect transport across the stunning Gran Canaria dunes. When booking a tour, you will find the lunch is often included, as you will be given the option to enjoy a relaxing break from the sun in a Bedouin tent.

If you’re travelling with family, Holiday World leisure park is the perfect day our for everyone. With lots of different activities and attractions on offer, you can ensure that everyone will leave having had an incredible time. With bowling alleys, arcades and even bars - you can easily spend the afternoon exploring before eating in one of the many surrounding restaurants.

Maspalomas nightlife is knowing for being lively, varied and sophisticated. With an array of different bars offering jazz, salsa, karaoke and other live music, you can be sure there will be a bar for every mood. With themed nights and parties, there’s plenty of opportunity for a night on the town. The Maspalomas Plaza is where most of the bar activity takes place, however, Holiday World amusement park is home to some of the most popular clubs on the island. Be warned, they only really start to get popular after everything else closes.

If you are looking for another incredible night out, the neighbouring Playa del Ingles is a great location for taking the party up a notch. Easily accessible via taxi, you won’t have to spend a fortune getting two and from the most popular clubs and bars.

No high rises this end of Maspalomas. Lovely park and plenty of green areas

There is a great park in this part of Maspalomas which has plenty to do for those who want to sit bythe river and read a book. Climb the artificial mountain. Children have a lovely play area and children's restaurant and picnic area. A short taxi ride to playa de faro - Melonares - brings you to beautiful shops both designer and boutique and an amazing beach with a promenade of restaurants with beautiful canarian food and wonderful fresh fish.

Holiday Heaven

The best thing about Maspalomas is that it is perfect for everybody. It´s quieter than Playa del Ingles & it´s more central than Puerto Rico. If you like staying by the pool or going to the beach the beaches are excellent. If you prefer doing a bit of sightseeing, it´s perfect - there are buses that go in both directions - north & south, and if you prefer renting a car, you are just a minute from the motorway to take you anywhere you would like to go.

Great Fun! Excellent Weather

Sun almost all year round. I was there in mid November and it was sunny and 27 degrees. Always windy (I suggest a small windbreak if you plan to be on the very nice sandy beaches). Nightlife in Playa del Inglés is absolutely great.

Great beach and nightlife holiday destination

I've been there 10 times and will go back. The beaches are stunning and huge (altho the ocean has taken away some last winter, apparently). Think Sahara sand meets water. It's great. The weather is absolutely perfect. Not too hot (max 30° C) and windy. Nightlife is great. Starts a bit late, being Spain after all, but great for singles and couples alike. Not sure families would want to hang around the Yumbo Centre (Playa del Inglés) tho :-)
