The lively resort of Hersonissos sits on the northern coast of Crete six miles west of notorious Malia. The long narrow resort is blessed with amazing beaches as well as easy access to other resorts and towns in the area. The promenade that runs the length of Hersonissos is perfect for both early morning strolls and late night partying. The small harbour is home to both yachts and working fishing boats as well as adding to the charm of the imposing waterfront. Either side of the port are the very popular central beaches.

Party all night

If you’re looking for a lively holiday with good nightlife, Hersonissos is a great option. The promenade comes alive after the sun goes down and the beats play until the sun re-appears. With nearby Malia and Heraklion on standby you will not be short of options.

Visit nearby Santorini

The coastline is dotted with impressive beaches as well as holiday destinations. Star Beach is a winner for the family with an adjoining water park as well as some thrill seeking entertainment on both wet and dry land. Inland the mountain top towns and villages add some authentic charm to the area. Off shore, Santorini is within reach via the daily ferries that run from Heraklion, only 12 miles east.

Things to do in Hersonissos

On the beach in Hersonissos

With three significant beaches and Blue Flag awards the centre of Hersonissos is well served on the beach front. During the peak summer months the beaches can get very busy, in part due the relative size of the two central beaches - both are long but quite shallow. Star Beach is a little further east along the promenade and a popular choice with both young thrill seekers and families looking for an exciting day at the beach. You’ll find lots of water sports as well as the opportunity to bungee jump should you fancy it.

Top Tip:

The Star Beach Water Park is set back from the beach and provides a great alternative to the beach if you’re looking for more water based fun.

Eat and drink in Hersonissos

The promenade running the length of the resort is busy with cafes, bars and restaurants. Hersonissos like all other Cretan towns has a strong coffee culture and you should certainly take the time to enjoy the many varieties the locals like to savour. The local tavernas are popular with visiting tourists and the local fish and meat dishes are fresh and lovingly prepared. Hersonissos is popular with northern European visitors and you will see this in the range of both restaurants and bars that are themed around countries including Germany, Ireland and England. The beach bars dotted along the coast are very popular both with day time visitors and for people seeking a drink with a view as the sun goes down.

Hersonissos nightlife

The nightlife is focussed on the bars and clubs along the waterfront. The evening doesn’t tend to get going until close to midnight and routinely runs through until 6am the following morning. The Cretans love a party and there are some great authentic bars and clubs aimed at the local market. Lovers of euro pop will not miss out. There are several clubs aimed squarely at the holiday market with high profile DJs playing the best and latest tunes. Clubs like Status, the Matrix Club and Amnesia are popular. If you’re looking for a more sedate evening there are loads of smaller bars and places you can sit with a cocktail in hand and enjoy the passing scenery.

Top Tip:

Malia is just down the road and the infamous Beach Road is ready and waiting.

Shopping in Hersonissos

The waterfront and surrounding streets are great for a bit of souvenir shopping. Beach essentials seem to be sold on every corner. If you want to find the best in local produce look out for pottery as well as locally produced honey and spices. There is also a strong tradition in producing leather goods across the island – maybe treat yourself to some new boots. If you are on the hunt for a new outfit there are some nice little boutiques selling locally made jewellery and clothes. The sprawling town of Heraklion is only 12 miles west of Hersonissos and is a mecca for shopaholics.

Top Tip:

If you want to explore the shopping opportunities in nearby Malia and Stalis consider the tourist train. It runs along the coast and is a nice way to get around.

Things to see in Hersonissos

Away from the town, head inland and explore the amazing hilltop towns and villages. It feels like stepping back in time and gives you the chance to experience the traditional Cretan hospitality. Villages like Koutouloufari and Piskopiano are great examples and the whitewashed walls and cobbled streets will really give you a sense of life in authentic Crete. You should also take the time to visit the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion as well as learn more about the ancient Minoan civilisation. For a cultural day trip, consider the journey across to Rethymnon, west of Heraklion. The incredible Venetian architecture and impressive fortress alongside the beautiful waterfront make the trip worthwhile.

We Recommend

White Lion

An ever popular bar on the main street running through the resort. A great place to meet friends old and new. The bar has a good menu of local and international favourites as well as big screen sport and a wide range of cocktails.

Taverna Harakas

This lovely local restaurant is in Old Hersonissos Square. The warm welcome and incredible menu make this a must visit if you’re a food lover. The shady terrace overlooking the fountain in the town square is a real delight.

Hersonissos

The resort has a fantastic array of nightlife for the younger generation and the more mature. It is as lively by day as it is by night! The restaurants are fantastic in the most part although a favourite is 'Acropolis' on the sea front. If you prefer a more relaxing evening there are also an array of restaurants and tavernas in Koutoulafari, Piscopiano and Old Hersonissos which are a nice walk for the fit and a short taxi ride for the not so fit at around 8 euro's. My favourite restaurant up in Koutoulafari would have to be Oniro's. Wonderfully friendly and outstanding food!.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The people!!!

PISKOPIANO A GREAT PLACE TO STAY IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL GREECE

PISKOPIANO IS SITUATED UP THE HILL FROM THE MAIN RESORT OF HERSONISSOS. IT IS MUCH QUIETER AND BETTER FOR THOSE WANTING TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL GREECE. IT IS SITUATED IN BETWEEN THE OLD VILLAGE OF HERSONISSOS AND KOUTOULOUFARI WHICH ARE BOTH WORTH A VISIT (WE WENT TO BOTH MANY TIMES). ALL THE RESTAURANTS WE TRID WERE LOVELY BUT THE ONE WHICH LEFT ITS MARK WAS DAVIDS IN PISKOPIANO. THERE ARE NO FRILLS, YOU ARE SITTING IN AMONGST THE LOCALS AND THE FOOD AND ATMOSPHERE ARE FANTASTIC (THE PRICES ARE FANTASTIC TOO, SO CHEAP).. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED IF YOU LIKE TO GO NATIVE BUT NOT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR WHITE LINEN TABLECLOTHS.

The best thing about my stay was ...

GREAT RESTAURANTS. VERY GREEK

nice. noisy and night life near the beach, quiet a little further

Lots of bars, restaurants, discos, crowded and noisy near the beach and quiet towards the hill and on the hill. We stayed 15 min from the beach, so there wasn't much to climb. Anyway there were lots of ATVs to rent. Me and my husband only went there for the sea and sun and relaxation, but there were plenty of young crazy people as well as families with children. The beach we always went wasn't the best ever, mostly because it was narrow and you could barely find a spot for your towels beside the sunbeds that cost some euros (I don't know how many, we never rented). I know there were some other beaches much better than that but we never bothered to go there, it was further and we were lazy... we just stayed in the sun and in the warm water. There were small fish in the clear water, swimming around us. I almost forgot: there were cruises starting from hersonissos, we went on a cruise towards a beautiful bay, and a nice village, had free barbecue on the boat and swam with the fish. The sea was blue and transparent, it was unbelievable. Very good price too. And there were some trips to Knossos.

The best thing about my stay was ...

there is everything for everyone and the criuses organised from there

Excellent resort

Hersonissos has a wide range of good quality restaurants and bars and plenty of shops along the sea front to browse all day and all night. The beach was very nice, with restaurants, bars and shops in easy walking distance. Plenty of things to do & see here, would thoroughly recommend it.

Very picturesque

The area we stayed in (Lim) is very quiet and was very nice, with a lovely small beach and a couple of Taverna's and a number of good small shops Down into the town area (About 15 minutes walk from our apartments) it is very busy and everything stays open utill the small hours, with lots of Bars to choose from and plenty of food choices We hired a car for a few days but you need to be very careful as drivers do not follow the normal driving rules and almost never idicate what they plan to do! We had a lovely time

The best thing about my stay was ...

the clear blue sea, it was just wonderful to be able to swim in clear warm water

Hersonnissos - party central

A busy town with small narrow beaches. Be wary of traffic through the narrow streets and the busy main road. Loads of tarvernas and bars and the associated "come on in" gauntlets to run. We were glad to have accommodation out of town but near enough to walk to when necessary.

The best thing about my stay was ...

It has eveything.
