Kefalonia Holidays & Hotels

Hotels in Kefalonia

The gorgeous Greek island of Kefalonia is abundant in nature, history and entertainment so whatever type of holiday you fancy, you’ll find it here. From large all-inclusive resorts and luxury hotels to villas and cheap self-catering apartments, there’s accommodation for every type of holiday maker. It’s also a popular setting for weddings which many hotels and venues can help organise.

Where to stay

The resort of Lassi is a hit with tourists, in part due to its close distance to the main town and the airport but also because of the beautiful scenery and hotels alike. The beach is white and sandy, the absolute perfect place to spend your Kefalonia holiday. The sunsets in Lassi are said to be the most spectacular in the area and people travel here specifically to experience this thing of beauty.

Fragrant pines line the long stretch of beach, where you can recline on a lounger and soak up the sun in Skala. Days can be spent participating in various water based activities and evenings are all about the nightlife. A lively resort, perfect for a friend’s getaway.

Myrtos Bay

The setting of classic movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, this place was made for the silver screen. With snow white sands and glistening clear water, Myrtos Bay is one of the most romantic spots in Kefalonia. Ideal for couples or those looking for a quiet holiday in a picturesque setting. Whilst there, make sure to explore the Drogorati Caves, which truly are a thing of wonder.

What to see

Kefalonia offers a host of stunning landscapes with beautiful beaches and vibrant foliage. Mount Ainos is a wonderful place to go on a hike where you can take in as much of the view of this Ionian Island as possible. You’ll get quite a workout as well.

You’ll also come across some some charming Greek towns and quaint fishing villages including Fiskardo. There you can observe the locals catching the amazing seafood you’ll be enjoying fresh come nightfall. You can also book in for your own fishing trip with a guide.

Kefalonia is a great place to indulge in a wine tour. The vineyards cover the hilly terrain as the grapes bask in the Greek sunshine. Find your favourite Robola at one of the many vineyards around Frangata.

Argostoli is the best place to go out when on holiday to Kefalonia. As the capital of the region, it’s by far the biggest town and features a host of hot bars and clubs with plenty of pubs to pre-game in. Dance music and cocktails fill the warm nights and you can also venture over to Sami or Lixouri for a great night out.

For a less crowded evening out, opt for the village of Lourdas, where you can enjoy a chill evening round the main square. The traditional tavernas and restaurants will be the perfect place to eat and drink and be merry.

What to eat

As well as the typical array of holiday restaurants such as fast food chains, pizza places and burger bars, you’ll find a great choice of traditional Greek restaurants. And you know what they say...when in Greece...have Greek food. With wonderful seafood, excellent Greek salads and well-seasoned meats, all using the finest home grown ingredients, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Be sure to try the locally produced Robola wine with some flatbread and souvlaki.

Most of the shops in Kefalonia are located in the capital town of Argostoli. Whether it’s holiday fashion, last minute essentials or cosmetics you can stock up there.  You can stock up local produce in one of the markets if you’re enjoying a self-catering stay, or just want to bring back some olives and feta cheese.

For souvenirs, head to Lithostroto where, along the main street you’ll find lots of shops selling local gifts and knickknacks as well as jewellery and beach necessities.

12 September 2011

Lourdas - lovely setting for views, swimming and eating!

We stayed at Eagle's Nest for two weeks in September 2011. We chose these apartments because of the great reviews we had read, and were not disappointed. The owner, Marina, could not have been nicer. The views over Lourdas Bay were as good as Sorrento, and we could see right across to Zante. The pool was wonderful - we saw it cleaned and regularly tested. A car is recommended if you don't like hill walking! The area has ample tavernas, restaurants and mini-markets - without having become over-commercialised. The nearest cafe / bar to our apartment has just been taken over by Liza, and renamed Liza's Bar - very friendly, and great value for both drinks and simple but very tasty food. The locals and visitors are already supporting it (Liza used to have a taverna a few miles away, and her customers have followed her! Opposite Liza's Bar is "O Platanos" (The Maple Tree) named after the major landmark overhanging the road here, which also has great views. Up the hill a bit, are some other good restaurants, Spiros was our favourite of these, with a good choice and friendly family running it. Slightly more expensive (and a bit more "up market") are Andromeda's and La Mer. Down by the beach there are several good places to eat, or just have a drink.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Views. weather, lots of places to eat - without being over-commercialised
