The picturesque village of Ouranoupolis, translating to "City of the Heavens” or “Town of the sky”, is located at the foot of Mount Athos with a backdrop of green hills and offers unspoilt natural beauty, relaxed atmosphere. It is 130 km from Thessaloniki airport. A visit to the small fishing harbour and fortified tower of Prosforio is recommended, the largest in Halkidiki, with a tradition in hand made carpets. The entrance to the Holy Mountain (Agion Oros) is also worth a visit, where you can marvel at the Byzantine monasteries and enjoy a cruise around the mountain. Relax with a drink or snack in the cafes and restaurants in the seaside village, browse the little shops in the small alley ways and in the evenings, frequent the various restaurants and ouzo bars, where visitors can sip on the local tsipouro drink and listen to the traditional Greek music performed by local singers. Ouranoupolis offers an interesting and relaxed destination for a laid back holiday.

Friendly and Beautiful

We were here in June. It had everything we needed, sun, sea, wonderful boat trips. Amazing icons and fascinating people. Good food, you need to ask which restaurants are the best.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The people,beach,sea and boat trips

Visit once, but then you're done.

Spoilt by large hotels, and crawling with stray dogs and cats which I found upsetting as they are all homeless and slowly starving to death. As you walk along you are pestered by restaurant staff to eat in their establishment. It is situated before Mount Athos (were women are not allowed to go) and so it really is a seaside cul de sac. Not worth a visit unless you are trapped in one of the local hotels and need a change of scenery.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Nothing springs to mind - that says it all really!
