Hotels in Skiathos
Skiathos is one of the smaller islands in Greece and provides a more chilled out, cool holiday. With large hotels available, many located by one of the 60 beaches, you can stay within walking distance to the seafront. Cheaper accommodation options are guest houses and villas where you can cater for yourself or you can stay in town in one of the apartments there, to stay close to the action.
Where to stay
The largest area on the island, Skiathos Town is the main tourist hub packed with restaurants and bars and a wide variety of hotels and apartments. Visit the Papadiamantis House Museum to learn about the island’s most famous writer or venture down the harbour to look at the many boats docked. Wandering through the charming streets you’ll see typical Greek architecture and once you venture towards the waterfront you’ll get a view of the impressive Bourtzi Fortress.
Voted one of the best beaches in Europe, the white sands of Koukounaries Beach will truly make you feel like you’re on holiday. One of the most popular destinations on the island, the area is full of great bars and restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat during you day away from the hotel. Enjoy a dip in the sea and some water sports as well.
Featuring a picturesque cove, Kanapitsa is a great place to stay if you want to spend every day at the beach during your holiday and enjoy some water sports and sunbathing. With lovely golden sands and a glistening shoreline, you’ll be able to chase your troubles away while basking in the Greek sun.
What to see
There are many breathtaking secluded beaches you can reach by boat on the island of Skiathos. It will be worth the travel as you can marvel at the aquatic life on your way there and admire amazing rock formations, caves and coves, not to mention the crystal clear water. Lalaria Beach and Banana beach are an absolute must see.
If you’re on holiday in Skiathos with your children or are just an animal lover yourself, you must visit the Skiathos Donkey Club. With the adorable four legged animals running around freely, you’ll be able to get up close and personal and feed them and even pet them. What’s better than an afternoon spent with these fabulous donkeys?
The maritime Culture and Tradition museum is a great place to take in some culture. You’ll be guided through the collection of historical artefacts relating to the island’s seafaring culture where you can learn more about the vibrant history of Skiathos. There is an open air theatre just behind the museum building that often holds open air concerts.
The island of Skiathos is definitely not one for the party animals. With a relaxed atmosphere, most of the nightlife happens around the harbour in Skiathos Town with many bars and restaurants all overlooking the water. You can start your night by enjoying the sunset with a cocktail in hand while reclining on a hammock. Some of the bars have dancefloors if you do fancy a boogie on your holiday but don’t expect massive clubs or discos. The beach resorts will have their own bars and provide on-site entertainment.
What to eat
Freshly caught fish, Skiathos pie and gyros should be on your menu when visiting this beautiful Greek island. With many scenic restaurants located by the waterfront and tavernas found inland you should take this opportunity to immerse yourself in the local cuisine. Amygdalota is an almond delight and the souvlaki is a no-brainer. International restaurants are available as well and you can shop for yourself in the food markets in town.
The Blue House Art Gallery is an amazing space where you can look at and buy handmade jewellery and crafts. Using jewels and other precious materials, the pieces you’ll find here will be one of a kind investments. You’ll also find a host of larger stores in Skiathos Town and will be able to buy something more authentic in the smaller village shops inland. All the beachfront shops will stock the necessities such as novelty sarongs, goggles and sun lotion.
