Porto is a small but culturally rich city, located in the north of Portugal on the banks of the Douro River. Famous for its Port Wine, the city is also known for its universities, bridges and historic Old Town, which was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO. Porto has its fair share of shops, museums and galleries and after winning the European Capital of Culture award in 2001 it started a programme of new cultural developments.
Who should go?
Porto is a popular destination for all ages due to its mix of culture and industry. From its museums and churches, to its vibrant clubbing scene, Porto offers something for all tastes.
alpharooms.com suggests
No trip to Porto would be complete without visiting the Ribera district of the city, in the heart of the Old Town. With its maze of cobbled streets and historic architecture, the Ribera is a living monument to the city’s rich past.

Must visit.

Porto is a lovelly city with very friendly people. There is lots to do and something for everyone. The food and drink had choices for all ranging from cheap to expensive but the quality was of a high standard. The buildings and historic sites are a must, and there are lots of them. A trip up the Douro river has to be done either a short trip or a day trip the scenery is breathtaking. Sun lovers will enjoy the climate and the sandy beaches. Public transport is very good and inexpensive allowing you to travel by Bus, Metro, Train, Tram and there is a Fernacular railway. Porto is a city built on several hills so walking can be tiring but you then stop and enjoy the culture that is all around you. Last but by no means least are the excellent Port house's across the Douro river from the main city, a trip to Porto without visiting and sampling their produce would be unforgiveable. Porto is one of the finest places to visit.

The best thing about my stay was ...

So much to do and see.

Porto Portugal

Only stayed in porto for 2 nights as over for a family wedding. Did a bus tour of city and was quite surprised as to how much there was to see of the city. It is a vibrant city full of bars and restaurants. Plenty of shops with good bargains to be had on a lot of clothing especially shoes. Shopping and socialising cheap in comparison to ireland.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Friendly people and not too far from a beach and good for sightseeing

Expect the unexpected

Booked Oporto for a stag do, based on price flights alone. Concerned by many mixed reviews, but these were quickly dispellled. The beer was ridiculously underpriced, and their attitude to alcohol was such that were a novelty, instead of an annoyance. And we partied hard. Alcohol aside, the people were incredibly friendly. The food and taxis were priced equally cheaply to the Super Bock beer. We were surprised at just how clean the place was. Everything made it into a bin. The sights we saw were a lot more spectacular than we were expecting, with some stunning views over the Douro River ending an excellent day starting with the Sao Bento station and river cruise under the bridges, whilst sampling some port and riding the cable car. There were several comments from our party of coming back with wives/girlfriends, and I am definitely one of them.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The spectacular bridges over the Douro

An un discovered gem

Porto is truly an un discovered gem, there is lots to see and do,probably more for adults than families. There is good selection of Chuches and fine old buildings, some are in need of repair, but that's part of the charm. The river area is lovely,I did a river cruise for 10euros on an old traditional boat.It was lovely day and the river offers good views. There is a lot of history to do with the production of Port and an area The Caves for it. The only draw back to Porto is steps, they everywhere,so it's not for the disabled.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Fine old buildings

Porto, full of character and very friendly

Fascinating mixture of ancient and modern. Easy transport system and very good range of cheap and expensive meals etc. For really good value try a fixed price meal in a smaller restaurant.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Affordable charm!
