Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and is located on the Danube River, just 60 kilometres from Vienna. This little-known destination is becoming increasingly popular due to the rise in budget air-travel, with visitors attracted by the city’s baroque palaces and gardens, picturesque castle, traditional beer halls and relatively low prices. The city’s Old Town is full of local charm, with small winding streets, Viennese-style cafes and quaint churches, making it the perfect destination to experience on foot. There are plenty of culinary choices on offer round the city, including the revolving Vesa restaurant, situated in a television transmitter overlooking the city.

Great place for a few days

Cheap and nice. Eat well at decent prices. Found the restaurant on the Danube near the old town on day we sailed to Vienna. Lovely people only too willing to help and serve. Recommended!!! Old town lovely and quaint. Find all the brass people as they are fun. Market in one of the squares good too altho a bit pricier than it needs to be,

The best thing about my stay was ...

Very quaint in the old town.

Lovely City Surprisingly Quiet

Bratislava is a small city, thus easy to get around the bits you want to see. The Old Town is beautiful, as is the castle. English widely spoken. Even next stop messages on the bus, the tram and the train in English. Prices a little less than UK. Only a good hour by train to Vienna.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Friendly welcoming people

We only flew in and out of Bratislava - Vienna was fantastic

I can't comment on Bratislava as we only flew in and out of the airport en route to Vienna. Ryanair use Bratislava airport as the gateway to Vienna, Prague and Budapest. We used the Eurolines bus to transfer from the airport to Vienna which was very good and cheap. Coming back we took the twin city liner catamaran up the Danube - also very good but a bit more expensive. Vienna itself is a beautiful city - lots of parks and open spaces, very clean. The U-Bahn (metro system) is fantastic - €13,50 for a 3 day pass which gives access to metro, trams and buses and the U-Bahn trains come every 4-5 minutes ! It is fairly expensive, although you cna do lots of things for free. museums and galleries cost around €9-10 per person - soon adds up but there are cheap tickets to be found and a lot of good family deals. If you want to eat cheaply there is always McDonalds (around €6 for a meal deal)

I am unable to rate Bratislava (see review) - I have rated Vienna

old and new parts, great for a few days

Plenty to see for a long weekend, lots of restaurants/bars/pubs, not enough live music. Cheap in locals pubs but more in keeping with European prices in tourist areas. Lots of people spoke English making things easier.

Great for a very short break

Bratislava was very nice with plentiful Bars, Restaurants and Coffee shops in the centre. The Paris Bistro in particular was our favourite. Bratislava was smaller than expected and therefore not suitable for more than as few days stay. Nevertheless, Vienna and Budapest are short trips away from this city.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Relaxed atmosphere

Lovely city

A pretty small city (population 500,000) which is lively yet historic. Plenty of bars and restaurants and a good atmosphere in the "Old Town" with buskers, living statues etc. and open air bars in the summer months. The castle is nothing to write home about except for the panoramic views of the city. On the Danube you can go day trips to Vienna and Budapest although the latter is a bit of a haul. Do try the trams which are cheap and efficient. Ideal for a short break but could get a bit boring if there too long as you will have "done" the city in 3 or 4 days

The best thing about my stay was ...

The cafes and restaurants

Charming city centre

Bratislava is very small for a capital city: my friends tell me there is a population of just 400,000. For our visit in January the city was very quiet indeed at the weekend. It is easy to enjoy the main sites as they are close together and there aren't many of them. The old town is lovely are a pleasure to walk through, but it is surrounded by unattractive Soviet era development. It is still possible to eat and drink cheaply in Slovakia, but the traditional fare is designed to provide as many calories as possible in as short a space of time as possible. We visited the State Opera in the old opera house: it was a first-rate production and the tickets are unbelievably cheap. A good location for a very short visit.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Esay to walk to all the main attractions.

Quaint city

Bratislava was ok, but not as good as some cities we have previously visited. The old town was quite small and was mostly cafes, bars and restaurants. The new part of the town was a pleasant walk away, with plenty of good shops and eateries. The highlight of our stay was a visit to Vienna along the Danube by hydrofoil. Vienna seemed to have a lot more to offer.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Italian restaurant, Parugia just off the main square

Bratislava old town very compact. Journey from airport by public transport easy - we got help from the Trip Adviser Forum with that one. Locals not very friendly but tried not to let that spoil our trip. Had a few days there but wouldn't return in a hurry.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Slovak Pub for atmosphere, food and drink
