The Costa de Almeria is Andalusia’s eastern most point. Further west are the more fashionable and popular coastal regions of Granada and the sunny Costa del Sol. The Costa de Almeria is a more natural landscape with a dry and arid interior that played host to a wide range of Spaghetti Westerns. Despite this, the area is famed for its production of fresh vegetables and flowers under huge poly tunnels. The area is rich in Arabic and Moorish influences and the capital and major sea port of Almeria is a fine example of this. The impressive Alcazaba stands above the port as a reminder of Almeria’s former existence as an Arabic stronghold. The port is a major departure point for ferries heading across the Alboran Sea to North Africa.

Welcoming villages and coastal towns

South of Almeria are the most popular beach resorts of Aguadulce and Roquetas de Mar. Roquetas is very popular resort with a lively marina, pleasant old town and beautiful beach. North of the capital are the quieter resorts of Vera and Mojacar. The Almeria coast is perfect for exploring and the mighty Sierra Nevada mountain range provides an epic back drop. The small villages and coastal towns are welcoming and the climate is perfect. Local fish and seafood should be eaten where possible and you can expect to find a lot of the local dishes have a North African influence.

The Almeria Fair

This annual event takes place in the last two weeks of August. The town comes alive with parties, events, dancing and a little bit of drinking. There are some sporting events linked to the fair as well as religious celebrations.

The stunning coastline of Cabo de Gata

This beautifully remote and tranquil stretch of coastline is a short distance east of Almeria on the headland. There is a small, peaceful beach resort and then mile after mile of unspoilt beach for you to enjoy.
