Hotels in Turkey

Whether you’re after a holiday resort with a party atmosphere, or just want somewhere secluded where you can catch up on some precious sleep, Turkey has got you covered. There is a wealth of accommodation options, from family friendly resorts with multiple swimming pools to romantic boutique hotels and luxurious 5-star resorts with all the trimmings.

With scorching summer temperatures, beautiful beaches, and a thriving nightlife, it’s no wonder you’re considering Turkey for your next holiday. Plus, there are multiple airports to fly into, including Antalya, Dalaman and Bodrum. The only thing to consider is: just where in Turkey will you head to first?

Where to stay

Istanbul

The capital of Turkey, Istanbul is famous for being half in Europe and half in Europe. It’s where lots of culture vultures gravitate to as it’s got historic buildings in its droves, from the iconic Sultan Ahmed Mosque, commonly known as the Blue Mosque, to the restored 5th century Galata Tower. There’s a range of accommodation to consider, including chic city hotels and comfortable cheap rooms.

Marmaris - Bodrum and Oludeniz

Marmaris is nestled into the Turkish Riviera, which is also known as the Turquoise Coast thanks to its deep-blue colour. That gives you an idea of just how idyllic this part of Turkey really is. Large all-inclusive holiday resorts line the beaches, while there’s a host of restaurants and bars to keep visitors entertained. To one side of Marmaris you have Bodrum, famed for its historic sites, while on the other you have Ölüdeniz, which is particularly beloved by beach lovers.

Izmir

Founded by the Greeks on the Aegean coast, Izmir is a metropolitan city bursting with history. It’s home to a number of large hotel chains, each providing affordable rooms in the city centre. Many travelers opt to stay around Lunapark, a small amusement park that features rollercoasters and various other kids’ attractions. From here, it’s only a 17-minute walk to the coast.

Antalya

Antalya is a Turkish resort city that’s more in the centre of the country. Luckily, it has its own airport, and direct flights operate from London, taking just over four hours. Affordable accommodation can be found in the main city centre, but for something a little more relaxed head to one of the two main beaches: Konyaalti or Lara beach. Where Konyaalti is more for family-focused holidays, Lara is a more exclusive part of the area, filled with luxury accomodation and restaurants.

What to see

As well as beautiful beaches and restaurants serving delicious international cuisine, there’s a lot to see and do while holidaying in Turkey. Down in Antalya, the peaceful Düden Waterfalls are just a short drive away from Lara Beach, while the city centre features Hadrian’s Gate - a huge entrance gate that was built in the year 130 for the Roman emperor Hadrian.

Over in Istanbul, there are iconic historic sights spread out all over the city. As well as the Blue Mosque, there’s the instantly recognisable Hagia Sophia, built in 537 AD, and the Bosphorus Bridge, which separates the European half of Istanbul from the Asian half.

Nightlife

There’s a different nightlife scene in most of the resorts, making it important to pick the Turkish holiday destination that’s going to suit your needs best. Istanbul has more of a varied nightlife, made up of live music, jazz clubs and trendy nightclubs. For a raucous night to remember, however, Bodrum has you covered. It’s actually rumoured to have more bars per square miles than anywhere else in the country, with Bar Street being the main attraction for partygoers. International hip-hop, pop and house music blare out from the bars, ensuring there’s something for all kinds of tastes.

What to eat

From sweet treats to hearty meals, the Turkish know how to eat. The most common thing you’ll probably see is Mezze, a small selection of dishes to kick off a main meal. There will often be little plates of everything from hummus to kofte and vine leaves, and it’s the best way to get a feel for Turkish cuisine. Baklava, made up of multiple layers of flaky pastry, and Turkish Delight, combined with walnuts, chopped dates or pistachios, are both unmissable. The authentic treats are completely unlike the ones you’ll find in the English supermarkets.

Shopping

Shopping lovers descend upon Istanbul for its vibrant markets. First of all, there’s the Spice Bazaar, where visitors can pick up unique textiles, spices and food, while the nearby Grand Bazaar attracts over a quarter of a million visitors every day. It’s made up of over 4,000 shops selling everything from ceramics to clothing. Other resorts also have a number of beachfront shops selling holiday souvenirs and gifts to take home to your loved ones.
