2nd visit to the city once in winter and now in summer.all sights are quieter in the winter and it is not as busy, but a lot more beautiful views in the summer sun.just wandering around the old cobbled streets at night where locals live is a great experience and we never once felt unsafe day or night.the only downside was queue jumping in Topkapi palace was not controlled very well by the security.

Istanbul - you either love it or hate it - we love it

Istanbul is a crazy none stop place, with so much to see and do. Shoppng is great from the bizarre's where you can pick up a bargain by haddling or the designer outlets, there's something for everyone. Not as cheap as it used to be but still a worthwhile place to visit. Ladies remember to carry something around with you to cover your shoulders when visiting the mosques.

A great City

We liked Istanbul and were very impressed by how clean and safe it was. The vendors are not as pushy as their reputuation; there has obviously been efforts made to stop harassment of visitors but expect some light hearted and jocular 'tempting' tactics. All the major sites are within walking distance (wear comfy shoes as the pavements are uneven) but there is also a good internal transit system. Credit cards are not widely accepted so have cash but Euros are used in most places (but the exchange rate Euro/TL is not favourable for the tourist). Entrance to tourist sites are a bit on the steep side. A visit to Suleymaniye hamami is a must (recommended on the last day); it is mixed and we were able to enjoy as a family, it was reasonably priced and included hotel transfers. Most fascinating - the Yerebatan Sarnici (Cisterns).
