Cornwall is a region on the UK’s most southwestern point. It has some of the country’s most beautiful coastline, with rugged cliffs, tucked-away coves and cerulean sea. The views inland aren’t too shabby either, with wild moorland stretching out over the cliff tops – a popular destination for casual and serious walkers alike. The residents of Cornwall are fiercely proud of their region’s Celtic heritage, and there’s no shortage of fascinating historical and archaeological sites to visit during your stay. The county has also long been a draw for artists thanks to its striking scenery, and the creative arts and crafts are flourishing in its larger towns. Of course, you can’t visit Cornwall without trying a traditional Cornish pasty, too.
Cornwall has the longest stretch of continuous coastline in Britain. The northern half is hugely popular with surfers, and has golden beaches backed by tall cliffs or smooth sand dunes. The southern coast is more rocky and sheltered in comparison, with secluded coves and pretty fishing harbours dotted along its length. For the really keen ramblers, the South West Coast Path – England’s longest waymarked footpath – runs for 300 miles around the Cornish coast, and is said to be one of the best walking trails in the world.
See the sights
The Cornwall & West Devon Mining Landscape is one of UNESCO’s newest World Heritage sites. The region once produced two thirds of the world’s supply of copper during the Industrial Revolution, and a visit to see the remains of the mines, engine houses and tramlines makes for an interesting day out. Alternatively, the whole family will love a trip to the Eden Project – home to the world’s largest indoor rainforest and more. Tickets are somewhat on the pricey side, but the Project is both fascinating and educational, so it’s well worth it. Or, if you enjoy a play every now and then, the Minack Theatre comes highly recommended. It’s an open-air stage by the sea, with spectacular views.
