Hotels in the US

Few places in the world do accommodation like the US. From the glitz and glamour of the themed hotels in Las Vegas, to chic stays in New York and family friendly resorts in Orlando, the US has accommodation options to suit the kind of getaway you’re after.

The U.S. is around 40 times the size of the United Kingdom, reflecting just how much there is to do in one country. Tourists flock to Las Vegas for the casinos and the nightlife, while Los Angeles ticks off big city sights and beaches with its nearby Santa Monica and Venice Beach. Few places capture the imagination as much as New York, the backdrop to hundreds of Hollywood blockbusters over the years. Whether you visit in the height of summer or over Christmas, the world-famous sights are enough to satisfy all holidaymakers.

And then there’s Orlando, home to Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Studios. Kids both big and small will lap up the magic of both parks, where rides, character parades and oodles of live entertainment await.

With so much to do in one country, there’s no wonder you’re considering the U.S. for your next holiday!

Where to stay

Orlando

Orlando accommodation depends very much on what sort of holiday you’re after. City lovers wanting to be in the heart of Orlando can take their pick from a host of central hotels, from quirky bohemian spots to a cheaper room within a recognisable brand. From Orlando, you’re just a 20-minute drive away from Walt Disney World too. Many also choose to stay in the nearby city of Kissimmee, thanks to its quieter atmosphere and lakefront park.

Walt Disney World

Those wanting to be wrapped up in the magic of Disney even more often choose to stay in the resort itself. It has a number of huge, themed resorts which cater for both children and the young-at-heart. Many also have a swathe of on-site facilities, like live entertainment and swimming pools.

Vegas

From the glamour of luxurious 5-star hotels to more affordable family rooms, many visitors to Vegas choose to stay on The Strip. Staying here means you’re central to everything, whether it’s playing big at the casinos or watching live shows that you’re after. Fremont Street, The Downtown part of Vegas, is an up-and-coming area that’s home to several hotels, the world’s largest video screen, and the Slotzilla zipline. It’s only a short drive away from the main Strip, but you get to see a totally different side to Las Vegas!

New York

The Lower Manhattan and Downtown areas of New York are the places to be if you’re wanting to be in the centre of all the city vibes. Just south of Central Park, by staying around here in one of the chic city hotels, you’ll be on top of the Empire State Building and Time’s Square, and close to the Statue of Liberty. Staying out of the main city centre in either Brooklyn or East Williamsburg is also an option; both offer some more affordable accommodation options and are where the hip crowds congregate.

Boston

Situated just a four-hour drive away from New York is Boston, one of the oldest cities in the US. Many of the hotels are based within renovated warehouses or old buildings and can be found around the North End area of the city. For something a little more affordable on holiday, consider staying in Somerville, the city’s financial district. It’s still close by all the action, but the accommodation on offer are a little more varied.

LA

Swanky high-rise hotels can be found a short walk from the Hollywood Walk of Fame, many of which hold a rich history of visiting movie stars. For a little more chilled and refined holiday, staying by the beach in Santa Monica or Venice Beach is a more popular option. And for those with Universal Studios in their sights, there are a number of resorts located just a few minutes’ walk from the park. Many of these have a number of facilities on-site, giving the whole family access to swimming pools, spas, shops, and more.

Chicago

Downtown Chicago has a wealth of accommodation options to suit all budgets, and around here you’ll be close to many favourite tourist spots, including Skydeck Chicago and Cloud Gate.

What to see

From the immense beauty of the Grand Canyon located just outside Las Vegas, to the skyscrapers of New York, there’s so much to see and do across the U.S. Florida and the West Coast are famed for their all-year-round warm weather, making them the perfect destinations for a winter holiday. Get outdoors to explore the nearby beaches outside Orlando, or head up for a hike around the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles. While you’re in LA, don’t forget to tick off Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood and the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

In New York alone there’s so much in the guide book to tick off. Take a wander around Central Park, head up to the top of the Empire State Building to view all over the city and get those unmissable holiday snaps in Times Square. With so much to see and do in the US, you’ll just have to get planning all those return trips!

Nightlife

No matter where you base yourself in the US, there’s a nightlife scene that will suit you. New York has an especially varied vibe, made up of chic rooftop cocktail bars, Broadway shows and all-night clubs. Of course, Vegas has one of the most vibrant nightlife scenes of them all, with cheap drinks deals, nightclubs and pool parties to see you through all hours of the day. There’s plenty to do outside of the bars though, thanks to nightly shows, concerts and musicals taking place at the majority of the large casinos along The Strip.

Orlando is well-known for its eclectic nightlife scene, from outdoor dance floors to an ice bar and a cowboy-themed club. At Walt Disney World there’s also a number of evening spots, with poolside bars and refined rooftop restaurants with a view.

What to eat

If there’s one thing that tourists to the U.S. like to talk about, it’s the food! There are generous portion sizes, delicious flavour combinations and all the sweet treats found in the supermarket. In-n-Out Burger on the West Coast are a fast food mecca for lovers of quick, satisfying meals. The Cheesecake Factory is another family friendly restaurant located all across the U.S., and it doesn’t just serve an incredible range of cheesecakes either - its gigantic menu has got everything from pasta to burgers via salads and buffalo wings.

In New York, there really is no escaping the pull of an authentic New York City pizza slice; just be sure to eat it with your hands rather than with a knife and fork! In LA, there’s a thriving health food scene, where you can just as easily pick up vegan jackfruit burritos as you can delicious fast food beef burgers.

Shopping

Whether you’re looking to window shop or pick up some gifts, Fifth Avenue is a shopping must for visitors to New York. In the one street it’s got everything from Tiffany & Co to Saks. The city’s Macy’s is the U.S.’s largest department store, featuring 10 and a half floors for tourists to get lost in. It’s a rite of passage for any first-time visitor to The Big Apple! Much like New York, Chicago also has a wave of high-end and affordable stores, with many centred around the famous Magnificent Mile.

LA and Las Vegas are also premium shopping destinations. In LA, you can pick up unique gifts and holiday souvenirs in the shops along Venice Beach, or head to The Grove for a range of international and national lifestyle and fashion brands. Las Vegas has shops peppered all around, many of which are themed and hidden around the individual casinos. For instance, the Grand Bazaar can be found by Bally’s hotel, while the range of high-end stores within Caesars Palace needs to be seen to be believed.
