Review of 'PLAYA BALLENA'

This was our first visit to the Costa de la Luz (early October) and as we were on a long weekend, we chose the Playa Ballena for its beachside location. The hotel is well presented and a very pleasant place to stay! Plush decor, spacious rooms and a nice pool area which inluded water feautures and jaccuzzis. There is also an indoor heated pool.

We did find that on arrival our room was not ready and we were kept waiting for quite some time before we were able to get to our room, but once we were given the keys we were not disappointed. The room was spacious with two huge double beds pushed together and a lovely patio overlooking the pool area which gave us access from the pool.

Access to the beach from the pool area is via a locked gate with a key card system. The beach itself is a huge expanse of golden sand running along the coast for miles and thankfully any development is set back away from the coastline. We found that the best time for the beach was in the mornings when the tide was out as it comes in quite close at high tide leaving a narrow strip of sand. There is one restaurant just before you get to the beach (menu in Spanish only) which was open for lunch and there are a couple more a short stroll away. You can hire a bicycle from the hotel and take a pleasant ride along the coast.

Food in the restaurant was good enough although not as extensive as other hotel based holidays we have had. Breakfast seemed more impressive than dinner! If you go half board you can choose between lunch and dinner each day. If you have a drink in the entertainment bar during the day you can enjoy free tapas (left overs from dinner/lunch!).

Costa Ballena itself is a very quiet purpose built residential area and golf course so if you are looking for a little nightlife you really need to venture into one of the nearby towns. The hotel does however offer family entertainment nightly. The majority of visitors were Spanish although there were some German and a hand full of English people. Be prepared to practice your Spanish as English is not widely spoken! There is more than enough to see around the area - Jerez (and the Bodegas!!!), Sanlucar, the national parks (Donana), Rota, Chipiona, Cadiz but best to plan in advance as doing something on the spur of the moment proved to be difficult! We would definitely return.

Review of 'PLAYA BALLENA'

Playa Ballena is a beautiful beach resort. The staff is friendly and most of the people at the reservation counter speak English (for those of you who do not attempt to use your limited Spanish skills).

The full board and half board provides a variety of food. The food is displayed in a appetizing fashion with any type of Spanish dish you could imagine.

The breakfast offers cereal, milk and fruit for those of you traveling with young children who are not willing to take a risk and try the Spanish dishes. For the adults, the service is pleasant and the food is great!

The rooms are clean, the showers have powerful water pressure and deep bathtubs. The beds in the rooms are spacious and the rooms are decorated nicely.

The pool area is exotic with a play area for children and ample seating on loungers for those who would like to soak in the rays near the numerous palm trees.

The hotel provides a card key to allow their guests to leave the premises and walk to the beach area. Those of you who want to get away from the hotel and crowds may enjoy a quiet walk along the beach.

I would highly recommend this hotel. We had a wonderful three days at Playa Ballena. However, when you travel...please make sure that you have your VOUCHER from Alpharooms.com before arriving. The hotel will not allow you to stay unless you provide a voucher.

Enjoy SUNNY SPAIN at Playa Ballena. We will deinitely stay at this hotel!

Review of 'PLAYA BALLENA'

The Playa Ballena is a suburb modern hotel, very comfortable and in a quiet location. It is a short distance away from the beach. The staff were very helpful, although they could not speak much english we made ourselves understood and had a few laughs along the way. Breakfast was served until 10am and the evening meal until 10.30pm, which we found very convenient and gave you plenty of time to change after a day out. There are local bus's but I would imagine it would be more convenient to hire a car for days out. We went to Rota on the local bus without any problems and very cheap. We went half board and both the breakfast and evening meals were very nice with a good choice and nicely cooked. The bedroom was very comfortable and the beds and towels changed regularly and the rooms were kept very clean. The entertainment was geared more to children (who from our observation were very well entertained), but having said that, we did enjoy 3 of the evenings entertainment. The local beach was very lovely and natural (no sunbeds or umbrellas) and we enjoyed pleasant walks along the beach which was uncrowded. We would certainly not hesitate to come here again.

Review of 'PLAYA BALLENA'

The location of this hotel is wonderful for those looking for a quiet base to visit the surrounding areas of Cadiz, Jerez and Seville. A short drive from Jerez Airport, makes easy access from many areas of England. Also ideal for those who just want to laze away the days at the pool or at the beach. Sun Loungers are available at the hotel, but for the beach you will need to do as the Spanish do and take your own chairs and parasols, all can be purchased locally for less than the cost of hiring for a week/fortnight. A gate from the hotel gives access to a long wide sandy beach, where there is plenty of room for sunbathing and playing beach games.

The choice of food was huge, and although typical Spanish, should satisfy everyone including veggies. Although basically a buffet, there is a grill counter where you can get fish, meat and even eggs cooked to your taste.

This hotel primarally caters for the Spanish, and although the buffet has English translation of what everything is, this is not the case on the grill, so some knowledge of what the Spanish for Rare/Medium/Well done, may be useful. The drinks menus are also in Spanish, but pointing to what you want should work. The reception staff speak some English so check in/out does not present any problems.

Room was exactly like the one on the website, we had view of the golf course, which was quieter than those with pool or sea views.

We went for the AI option but when I go back, I would only take the HB Option as the price of drinks in the hotel is very reasonable.

This is a family hotel and all the entertainment, that starts at 22.00 with the mini disco is child orientated. We went along because we were AI and only stayed for 2 nights, but if had stayed longer would have ventured out to some of the local bars.

In summary, wonderful hotel, fabulous location, clean, good facilities, exceptional food, friendly staff, lovely bed and bathroom with A/C, TV and mini bar (not included in AI). Not many non Spanish visitors, so will help to have some basic Spanish. Entertainment focused on Children.
